Sunsets, Swing Bands and a UConn Wedding

This UConn wedding day had it all. Rain, a crazy sunset, ice cream stops on the way to the reception, art galleries, a swing band, a beautiful ceremony and two of the best people around.

You feel better when you’re around Alex and Steve. They are two of the most positive people I’ve met and after photographing them last year at UConn, Frankie and I had this date circled.

The wedding day began at St. Mark’s Church on the UConn campus. Alex and Steve’s relationship is deeply tied to St. Mark’s and you could see how at home and comfortable they felt within the chapel. It was an honor to witness them exchange vows in a place so near and dear to them. For me, it certainly doesn’t hurt when the chapel is a photographer’s dream.

The sunset that capped the evening was just gravy on an unforgettable wedding day. I’m so excited to share this preview.

I feel like this is a stylistic departure for me. Maybe it’s not – I’m too close to my work to really know when I’m doing something different, but it felt different when I shot it. One thing I’m sure of – I talk way too much during my engagements. So for this session, I just shut up and documented the two people in front of me. Some pointed direction here and there, but basically it was all them. And that was awesome. Every time I shoot a Beacon Hill engagement I try to do something different to keep it fresh. So I tried shutting up and it worked out better than I couldn’t hoped.

Hillary + Ken, I’ll see you two in September. I’ll be crossing my fingers for a warmer afternoon, but I know you two can rock a chilly day like none other.

Technical crap, finally rocking the Nikon 58 1.4. This thing is a game changer for me – the perfect focal length for the look I’m going for and the quality I need. I don’t know how I’ve gone so long without it.

Let’s talk wedding albums.

I’ve never been one to push wedding albums. Sure, they’ve always been an option and I’ve always enjoyed designing them, but I understand that most couples want to enjoy their photos digitally and share them with friends and family online. It’s kinda just the way we do things these days. But here’s the truth, I want to see your images printed.

Whenever I shoot a wedding, I’m envisioning this book. As I move through your wedding I’m already seeing what image will be the key spread, the photos that will bookend the day, the centerpiece image from the ceremony, the details that set the scene. But I’m also picturing you two – 10, 20 years down the road, taking this album off the shelf and reliving your wedding day. I’m imagining your kids pulling it out on a rainy day and laughing at how young you looked. I’m seeing you dusting it off on a day when it’s not so easy to be in love and remembering why you fell for one another in the first place.

Digital images are beautiful, but photos take on a different quality when they’re brought into the real world. So let’s print more photos. Let’s make more albums. Let’s showcase your wedding the way it was always meant to be seen. So, with that said, I’m taking 15% off all albums until October – that’s for any couple, past, present or future. Just shoot me a message and let’s start designing.

A Foggy Night at the Lighthouse Inn

A Lighthouse Inn Wedding on Cape Cod. I love Cape Cod – we don’t shoot there nearly enough (wink wink nudge nudge future couples). I appreciate that most Cape weddings turn into little destination weddings for the people traveling down, so for the most part – the celebration never ends with everyone being on site with the couple. Brittany and Greg were married on a beautiful June day earlier this summer which played out in typical cape fashion. The morning started off sunny and warm but quickly gave way to a moody, foggy, evening soon after the ceremony.

The reception incorporated the lighthouse motif of the inn throughout the decor and table settings and I can’t say enough about the beautiful florals from J Smith Floral Design (including the largest bouquet we’ve ever photographed). I’m grateful to have been a part of this day and I’m so excited to share this recap!

Never underestimate the beauty you can find 10 minutes from your house. Earlier this summer I met up with Lauren and Steve at Horn Pond to shoot some engagement photos. The light was perfect, with the sun setting just behind the tree line. We made our way around the secluded paths at Horn Pond and wrapped just after sunset. Here are a few of my favorites from my session. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times, shooting photos for people I’ve known since elementary school never gets old. Can’t wait to do it all again next May.
